Southwest Florida’s traditional “season” runs from about Thanksgiving to Easter, but people who stick around for summer have a whole lot to enjoy—especially here on Anna Maria Island, where our natural, laid-back vibe goes hand-in-hand with taking it easy in our beachy paradise during July and August.
Shop Like a Local
The popular Coquina Beach Market continues on Sundays through July. Live music, great food, and colorful items from local vendors make for a fun and fantastic afternoon stroll, just steps from the Island’s southernmost beach.
Hit the Water Right
One of the best ways to enjoy the water in the summertime is to see it later in the day. That’s why Happy Paddler’s sunset tours draw cool crowds even in the off-season. Set off with guides who grew up cruising these local waters, and take in the spectacular sunset show. It’s the perfect way to bask in nature’s bounty without getting burned.
Take Yourself Out to the Ballgame
While the Spring Training Grapefruit League brings the crowds in to see Major Leaguers warm up for the regular season, baseball continues through the summer with our hometown Bradenton Marauders, the single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marauders play their home games at historic McKechnie Field in LECOM Park, a fantastic, family-friendly environment.
See the Sky from the Inside
Bradenton’s Bishop Planetarium utilizes state-of-the-art technology to take your on mind-blowing tours of the universe—all from super-comfy seats in a dark and soothing, air-conditioned theater. This summer’s programming includes popular “Stelliferous Live” highlighting seasonal night skies, “KidSpace” program for elementary-age students, and regular screenings of the Smithsonian Channel’s “The Day We Walked On the Moon.”
See the Sky at Night
Planetarium or no, Anna Maria Island is one of the best places in the area for stargazing, because we’re relatively low on light pollution, and especially so during sea turtle season. That absence of intrusive signs and spotlights leaves the stars to shine bright. And staying at Cedar Cove means you can kick back, look heavenward and contemplate everything the universe has to offer.
